República Islámica de Irán situada entre el Mar Caspio al norte y el Golfo Pérsico y el Golfo de Omán al sur. Convencionalmente, es el país más oriental de Oriente Medio.

Esta tierra se conocía antiguamente como Persia. Irán limita con Afganistán, Armenia, Azerbaiyán, Irak, Pakistán, Turquía y Turkmenistán.

Con una superficie de 1.648.195 km², Irán es casi tres veces más grande que Francia o ligeramente más pequeño que Alaska.

La mayor parte del país está situada en la meseta iraní (una formación geológica en Asia occidental y central), excepto las regiones costeras del Mar Caspio y la provincia de Juzestán en el suroeste del Golfo Pérsico. Las montañas Zagros, en el oeste, forman la cadena montañosa más grande de Irán, Irak y el sureste de Turquía. En el norte de Irán se eleva la cadena montañosa de Elburz o Alborz, que se extiende desde la frontera con Azerbaiyán a lo largo de toda la costa occidental y meridional del Mar Caspio. El monte Damavand, a 5.610 m (18.410 pies), es la montaña más alta de Irán ubicada en la cordillera de Elburz.

Irán tiene una población de 83 millones de personas (en 2020). La ciudad más grande del país es Teherán, que es la capital y el centro político y económico de la república.
Otras ciudades importantes son Mashhad, Isfahan, Karaj, Tabriz, Shiraz, Ahvaz y Qom.
Los idiomas hablados son el persa (farsi, oficial), el kurdo, el azerí, el árabe y el baluchi. La religión oficial es el Islam chiita.
La población de Irán se concentra en el norte, noroeste y oeste. Las vastas zonas áridas del centro y este del país, alrededor del Dasht-e Kavir, el Gran Desierto de Sal y los desiertos pedregosos y campos de dunas de Dasht-e Lut tienen una densidad de población mucho menor.
