République islamique d’Iran située entre la mer Caspienne au nord et le golfe Persique et le golfe d’Oman au sud. Classiquement, c’est le pays le plus oriental du Moyen-Orient.

Le pays était autrefois connu sous le nom de Perse. L’Iran est bordé par l’Afghanistan, l’Arménie, l’Azerbaïdjan, l’Irak, le Pakistan, la Turquie et le Turkménistan.

Le pays IRAN partage également des frontières maritimes avec le Kazakhstan et la Russie (dans la mer Caspienne), Bahreïn, le Koweït, Oman, le Qatar, l’Arabie saoudite et les Émirats arabes unis.
Avec une superficie de 1 648 195 km², l’Iran est presque trois fois plus grand que la France ou légèrement plus petit que l’Alaska.

La majeure partie du pays est située sur le plateau iranien (une formation géologique d’Asie occidentale et centrale), à l’exception des régions côtières de la mer Caspienne et de la province du Khouzistan au sud-ouest du golfe Persique. Les monts Zagros, à l’ouest, forment la plus grande chaîne de montagnes d’Iran, d’Irak et du sud-est de la Turquie. Au nord de l’Iran se dresse la chaîne de montagnes Elbourz ou Alborz qui s’étend de la frontière de l’Azerbaïdjan le long de la côte ouest et de toute la côte sud de la mer Caspienne. Le mont Damavand, culminant à 5 610 m (18 410 pieds), est la plus haute montagne d’Iran située dans la chaîne de montagnes de l’Elburz.

L’Iran compte 83 millions d’habitants (en 2020). La plus grande ville du pays est Téhéran, qui est la capitale et le centre politique et économique de la république.
Les autres grandes villes sont Mashhad, Ispahan, Karaj, Tabriz, Shiraz, Ahvaz et Qom.
Les langues parlées sont le persan (farsi, officiel), le kurde, l’azéri, l’arabe et le baloutche. La religion officielle est l’islam chiite.
La population de l’Iran est concentrée au nord, au nord-ouest et à l’ouest. Les vastes zones arides du centre et de l’est du pays, autour du Dasht-e Kavir, du Grand Désert Salé, ainsi que les déserts pierreux et les champs de dunes du Dasht-e Lut, ont une densité de population bien plus faible.
